Catch some SUMMER Runners!

Fishguard Summer Downwind

Warm Summer Runners!

Fishguard Summer Downwind offers Ocean ski and OC paddlers of all classes a spectacular 14kms of ocean runners from Goodwick to Newport Parrog. The Ocean Racing season is well underway, so how about a fun but challenging 13kms of open-sea swell giving you a downwind experience to remember? It will give you some local knowledge in advance of FBOR’17 over (most of) the new. shortened course.

Down here in Pembrokeshire we’re watching the waves roll past again and want to share them with other paddlers – so come on down and join the party.

What people have asked for is NOT a race, more of a cruise – if that’s possible on a racing boat when you’re having fun!

Course – Wind Forecast (Wednesday) WNW F 3, veering West F 4

Fishguard Summer Downwind will run from Goodwick Beach to Newport Parrog – about 14km with at least 10km downwind. After leaving the shelter of Fishguard Harbour (1.6km) we  paddle east beside the harbour wall, turning north under the shelter of the Llanwnda cliffs to maximise our east-ing before our long downwind begins – very much out at sea! The forecast WSW swell will balance the WNW winds giving fast runners to skim Dinas Head before the next open-sea leg – staring to Newport Parrog across the bar!

As ever, we can’t guarantee the weather – but we have alternative courses for almost all eventualities. The are 9 good surfing beaches around Pembrokeshire so we’ll be sure to find a fun run that’s pumping!

There will be updates as the forecast is refined during this week – and we’ll have a firm decision on the course and final timings  on Thursday 29th June – all well publicised on Facebook and by email so PLEASE SiGN UP below!

The forecast conditions will suit Confident Intermediate Paddlers and Above

You must be confident and competent at riding 4-5ft swells with an offset tailwind (possibly gusting to Force 5) and be 100% capable of unaided reentry in these conditions. The support RIB drivers are top class but they, and all the paddlers, need you to be strongly self-reliant.

11:00   Meet at Newport Parrog Car Park   to share lifts and roof-rack space

11:45pm  –  Drop boats on the grass at Ocean Lab then park cars in the Free Goodwick Moor Car Park – (behind Seafront Garage)
N.B. There’s another event on the beach so no parking in Ocean Lab Car Park.

12:00  –  Launch off Goodwick Beach – in front of Ocean Lab

Finish  –  at Newport Parrog about 13:30

This is NOT a race, we will be (fast) cruising in company so the estimated time is 1hr 30mins start to finish, allowing for any delays.

There Will Be 2 Support RIBs

So we’ll be asking for a fuel contribution from all paddlers, but this is NOT an entry fee. Pembrokeshire Ocean Paddlers are having a club paddle, and anyone joining us is asked to also join us in paying a suggested fuel contribution to the private volunteer support RIBs.

These boats burn about 8 gallons (about £40) per hour which gets expensive over the time they’re at sea on our behalf. Each paddler (or boat) will pay a fuel contribution of £20 – if we get enough people that could get to be less.
