Fishguard Spring Downwind
Spring Is Here!
. . . and the Ocean Racing season is looming. Most of us are paddling longer and harder sessions to to prepare the season’s racing – and the Icon Classic is on May 20th.
Down here in Pembrokeshire we’re watching the waves and wondering who’s up for a Spring Downwind over the FBOR’17 course on 6 – 7 May weekend – just two weeks ahead of Icon.
What people have asked for is NOT a race, more of a cruise – if that’s possible on a ski when you’re having fun!
Change of Course! Newport to Goodwick: About 13km total – 11km Downwind
We’ve checked various weather forecasts for this coming weekend and like what we see!
On Saturday 6th, the wind is showing ENE 3/4 gusting 5 with a swell underneath from much the same direction that will howe been building for at least three days. Although this wont suit our intended Abereiddy – Goodwick course, for the alternative Newport – Goodwick direction it’s nearly perfect!
High tide on Saturday is a neap at 17:32 so the East going tidal flow around Dinas Head will be manageable for competent paddlers. The following wind will give more than enough support to overcome the contrary tide.
The distance we’ll aim at is 13km; 2km set-up in relative shelter of Newport Bay, then turn downwind for 11km in two legs with the wind almost straight behind. The forecast is for a good, following 1.3m groundswell (83º) built up over three days.

1pm – Meet at Goodwick Moor Car Park – behind Ocean Lab
2pm – Launch from Newport Parrog Car Park
Finish at Goodwick Beach about 4pm
Since this is NOT a race, we will be (fast) cruising in company so the estimated time is 1hr 30mins start to finish, allowing for any delays.
There Will Be Support Boats
So we’ll be asking for a fuel contribution from all paddlers, but this is NOT an entry fee. Pembrokeshire Ocean Paddlers are having a club paddle, and anyone joining us is asked to also join us in paying a suggested fuel contribution to the private volunteer support RIBs.
These boats burn about 8 gallons (about £40) per hour which gets expensive over the time they’re at sea on our behalf. Each paddler (or boat) will pay a fuel contribution of £20 – if we get enough people that could get to be less.
